FAQ
- How do I find what percent one number is of another?
- Divide the part by the whole, then multiply by 100. Example: 50 of 200 → (50 ÷ 200) × 100 = 25%.
- What's the difference between part and whole?
- The part is the smaller portion you're comparing; the whole is the larger reference amount.
- Where is this useful?
- Grades, battery/usage percentages, progress to goal, market share—any time you compare part vs whole.
- Can the part be larger than the whole?
- Yes! If you got 150 points out of 100 possible (with bonus), the result is 150%. This happens with growth over 100% or when comparing increases that exceed the original.
- How do I calculate my test score percentage?
- Divide your score by the total possible points, then multiply by 100. Example: You scored 42 out of 50 points → (42 ÷ 50) × 100 = 84%.
- What if the result has many decimal places?
- Round to 2 decimal places for most purposes. For example, 33.33333% can be written as 33.33%. For very precise work, you might keep more decimals.
- Is there a difference between 'percent' and 'percentage'?
- Percent is used with specific numbers (25 percent), while percentage is used generally (a large percentage of users). Both refer to the same concept of parts per hundred.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Dividing in the wrong order: Always divide part by whole, not whole by part. For "50 is what % of 200", use 50 ÷ 200, not 200 ÷ 50.
- Forgetting to multiply by 100: After dividing, you must multiply by 100 to convert the decimal to a percentage. 0.25 needs to become 25%.
- Mixing up which number is which: The number after "of" is usually the whole (reference), and the number being compared is the part.
- Not handling decimals properly: If you get 0.84, that's 84%, not 0.84%. Remember to multiply by 100.
